Encouraging 5-year olds to attend to landmarks: a way to improve children's wayfinding strategies in a virtual environment

چکیده
Wayfinding is defined as the ability to learn and remember a route through an environment. Previous researchers have shown that young children have difficulties remembering routes. However, very few researchers have considered how to improve young children's wayfinding abilities. Therefore, we investigated ways to help children increase their wayfinding skills. In two studies, a total of 72 5-year olds were shown a route in a six turn maze in a virtual environment and were then asked to retrace this route by themselves. A unique landmark was positioned at each junction and each junction was made up of two paths: a correct path and an incorrect path. Two different strategies improved route learning performance. In Experiment 1, verbally labeling on-route junction landmarks during the first walk reduced the number of errors and the number of trials to reach a learning criterion when the children retraced the route. In Experiment 2, encouraging children to attend to on-route junction landmarks on the first walk reduced the number of errors when the route was retraced. This was the first study to show that very young children can be taught route learning skills. The implications of our results are discussed.

Wayfinding characteristics and familiarity indexes in an urban environment
Many people are encountered with finding the best way to reach to their destination. One definition for wayfinding is “the act of travelling to the destination by continuous processes of making route-choices whilst evaluating previous spatial decisions against stable cognition of the environment. General understanding and keen appraisal of the environment can aid decision-making process of how...
متن کاملWayfinding behavior and spatial knowledge of adults and children in a virtual environment: The role of landmarks.
This study investigated the effect of different organizations of landmark-location pairings as fine-space information on wayfinding behavior and spatial knowledge on a total of 90 participants: 30 second graders, 30 sixth graders, and 30 adults. All participants had to find their way to a goal in a virtual environment with either randomized or categorical landmarks, or without any landmarks. Th...
متن کاملIs Spatial Intelligibility Critical to the Design of Large- scale Virtual Environments?
This paper discusses the concept of 'intelligibility', a concept usually attributed to the design of real-world environments and suggests how it might be applied to the construction of virtual environments. In order to illustrate this concept, a 3d, online, collaborative environment, AlphaWorld, is analyzed in a manner analogous to spatial analysis techniques applied to cities in the real world...
متن کاملWayfinding Performance in and the Spatial Knowledge of a Color-coded Building for Adults and Children
The study reported here investigates the effect color has on the performance in a wayfinding task, the wayfinding strategies used and the acquisition of survey knowledge of a total of sixty participants: twenty second graders, sixth graders, and adults each. All participants had to find their way to a goal in a virtual environment with either a colored or a gray ground. After that, they had to ...
متن کاملSQUARELAND: A virtual environment for investigating cognitive processes in human wayfinding
We introduce a new virtual environment (VE) called SQUARELAND, consisting of a 10×10 block maze, which allows for all kinds of investigations in human wayfinding. It enables researchers to quickly implement experiments on indoorand outdoor wayfinding, including variations of route length, route complexity, availability of landmarks, etc. The basic setup was programmed with the freeware GoogleSk...
